The plot may sound like a straightforward thriller, but in fact director, Abel Ferrara has staged a confusing chase with many dark images in “Zeros And Ones”, which will repel many viewers. Here’s the trailer:
In “Tomasso and the Dance of the Ghosts” as well as in “Siberia” director Abel Ferrara processed his biography and his dreams in very personal films, whereby he let himself be played by Willem Dafoe, and especially “Siberia” looks like a hallucination made into a film. In Zeros And Ones, Ethan Hawke, currently starring as an antagonist in the new Marvel series Moon Knight, takes on a dual role that reflects two sides of Abel Ferrara’s personality.
“Siberia” seems as if Abel Ferrara had transferred his dreams to the screen in a comparatively unfiltered manner, and “Zeros And Ones”, which was completely different in terms of content, has also not become an accessible film. Ethan Hawke plays a US elite soldier in Rome, which consists of many largely empty streets due to the corona pandemic. The soldier is involved in terrorist attacks and has a brother (also played by Ethan Hawke) who may be part of a terrorist cell.
The trailer may hide the shape of “Zeros And Ones” a bit. This film is an impressionistic series of images of deep black or at least very dark images from hand-held camera shots that appear spontaneous and our critic Teresa Vena couldn’t relate to this aesthetic. In the official DashFUN review, “Zeros And Ones” only got 1.5 stars, in the conclusion it says: “Even Ethan Hawke comes across as [„Abel Ferraras“] double alter ego as colorless and uninspired as the current pandemic references.”
If you are still curious about the extraordinary project, you don’t have to wait too long: “Zeros And Ones” will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 5, 2022, pre-orders are already possible.
