Released in 2015, “A Bigger Splash” features a 5-star cast. Among them, we find Tilda Swinton who does not speak much in the film. And there is a reason for that.
HAS bigger Splash : remake of a classic French
A year before offering the world the film Call Me By Your Name (which reveals to the general public Timothy Chalamet)Italian director Luca Guadagnino book in 2015 HAS bigger Splash a remake of The swimming pool. Released 45 years earlier, the feature film is a small classic of French cinema. Thus, the film directed by Jacques Deray makes an impression thanks to legendary actors such as Alain Delon, Romy Schneider or even Jane Birkin.
For this remake, the cast is just as flashy. Indeed, we find there Ralph Fiennes, Tilda SwintonDakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts. HAS bigger Splash so follow Marianne Lane, a famous English rock star who decides to spend a few days off in Sicily, with his companion Paul. This is without counting on an unexpected reunion with his ex Harry who introduces him at the same time to his daughter Penelope. The situation becomes complicated when the latter tries to seduce Paul while Harry tries to win back Marianne.
A role reworked for the occasion
In HAS bigger SplashTilda Swinton plays the role of a singer who decides to isolate herself from the stage in order to rest her voice; a role not so trivial for the actress. Indeed, during his time on the Canal+ show The Big NewspaperMatthias Schoenaerts evokes the reason for the particularity of the role played by the actress:
There are several reasons. But I remember that when Luca called me, he said to me: “Here, I saw Tilda, she had a great idea: she go not talk during the movie” .(…) Me, I said to myself: “How are we going to settle this?“It freaked me out. Afterwards, I thought it was an incredible idea. We had to make sure that we could establish this relationship, but in a non-verbal way.

An interview with Tilda Swinton with the BBC given more details that explain why she is voiceless in HAS bigger Splash. Thus, at the time when the role was offered to her, the actress was in a troubled period of her life when, for personal reasons, she didn’t want to talk anymore. She therefore decides to accept the role on the sole condition that she would have nothing to say in the film:
I didn’t want to say anything. But I still wanted to make the film! It was the only way I had to get there (…) The more I thought about it, the more I felt that it would work and that it would be good for the film. It would increase the tension with Ralph’s character, Harry, who just talks. It would also explore a character forced into silence when his entire career has been devoted to his own noise.
Damn Tilda…
