January 5, 2022 at the movies – That Paul Thomas Anderson likes to situate his stories in the past is nothing new, so much has it become one of his hallmarks. With Licorice Pizza, he returns to the 70s of Boogie Nights, but with more sweetness and tenderness, since his ninth feature film is presented as a cross between a romantic comedy and a coming-of-age story.
Inspired by American Graffiti and It Heats Up at Ridgemont High School (with Sean Penn, who plays a small role here), Paul Thomas Anderson stars two San Fernando teens who grow up, get lost, and fall in love. The opportunity, for us, to discover a duo of actors on whom we will have to rely in the future: Alana Haim, member of the rock group Haim that she forms with her sisters and whose filmmaker has directed several clips. And Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, the director’s favorite actor.
Surrounded by more established actors (Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper…), they shine in this intimate and family story in more ways than one. Because the sisters of Alana Haim embody those of her character. Cooper Hoffman’s mother makes an appearance. And we meet Sasha Spielberg, daughter of Steven, or George DiCaprio, father of Leonardo who almost played a role in Licorice Pizza.
January 12, 2022 at the movies – When the phone rings on January 12, it might not be to wish the people of Woodsboro a Happy New Year. Because Ghostface and the Scream saga will make their comeback for a new series of murders which promise to be particularly brutal: directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Wedding Nightmare), who succeed the late Wes Craven, the film will be banned to those under 16 in France, which had not happened since the first one.
Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and Dewey (David Arquette) will therefore have a hard time. Unless one of them is the killer, as the character posters like to suggest. Undoubtedly one of the false tracks of an opus for which several endings were turned, in order to avoid the leaks, and which could well be tempted to kill one of the historical ones. History, for the new directors, to mark their territory.
One of the great mysteries that surround this Scream concerns precisely the approach of the duo, and its way of extending the speech of Wes Craven. Even if wanting to play the metatextual card vis-à-vis a saga which already had the particularity of dialoguing with the horror genre in which it is inscribed can prove to be perilous.
January 19, 2022 at the movies – A film noir, a real one. Without the slightest supernatural element. This is the bet of Guillermo del Toro with Nightmare Alley. Adapted from the novel “The Charlatan” by William Lindsay Gresham (which already gave birth to the film of the same name in 1947), the work presents itself as the most realistic of its author to date, even if it feels like a fish. in the water during the first part, which takes place in a circus with its fairground monsters.
Four years after the Oscars for Best Film and Director received for The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro is back in the cinema and knows he is expected at the turn. But he was able to surround himself with renowned collaborators behind the camera, and a prestigious cast in front: Bradley Cooper, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett or even his faithful Ron Perlman. All for a result, as always, visually sublime.
January 26 at the cinema – Seriously suffering from a rare blood disease, and determined to save all the victims of this pathology, Dr. Morbius takes a desperate bet. But what at first glance seems successful quickly turns out to be a potentially more serious cure than the disease …
After the Venom played by Tom Hardy, Sony weaves the web linked to the Spider-Man universe with Morbius, vampire played by Jared Leto. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, author of the terrifying Life, the feature film will retrace the origins and the transformation of Doctor Michael Morbius into a bloodsucker. See…
