Yes, that can also be comic cinema: While Marvel relies on entertaining popcorn entertainment, in which hordes of superheroes rush through various dimensions in order not just to save the world, but several worlds at once, DC and Matt Reeves bake with “The Batman“ much smaller rolls – one might think so, at least at first glance. But this impression is deceptive.
Because even if the latest screen adventure of Gotham’s Dark Knight is basically nothing more than a serial killer hunt à la “Seven” or “Zodiac”, packs “Planet of the Apes” and “Cloverfield” makers Reeves into his investigator Thriller loads of show value – and takes its audience for three full hours (!) into a breathtakingly gloomy, fascinating world. This is not only incredibly atmospheric and visually stunning, but also as exciting as it is spectacular. Now also in home cinema:

With worldwide box office grossing in excess of $770 million, “The Batman“ is currently the second most successful film of the year (after “Doctor Strange 2”). And this success is likely to continue in the home cinema from now on: It is therefore no coincidence that Warner is releasing the DC blockbuster in a series of limited collector’s editions, which can no longer be ordered in the online shops of MediaMarkt or Saturn Amazon are at least partially available through third parties.

“The Batman’ isn’t a typical origin story, where we first get to know Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) before accompanying him on his becoming Batman. Instead, he roams through Gotham at night to rid the city of criminal scum – with limited success. Violence, crime and corruption are raging worse than ever.
When the mayor, Don Mitchell (Rupert Penry-Jones), is killed by a masked killer just before the upcoming election, righteous lawman James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and Batman join forces to track down the crime, and quickly realize that they are with them have to do with a very special case: Because there is a whole series of murders that are supposed to finally uncover the lies on which the city was once built…
While comic connoisseurs in “The Batman”Of course, you should recognize various aspects from the templates “The First Year” and “The Long Halloween”, which are among the most popular stories about the Dark Knight, but there are also elements in the latest Gotham adventure that we already see in the cinema got to see – and yet somehow it’s all very different.

Played by Paul Dano, the Riddler isn’t a onesie-wearing joker (like Jim Carrey in Batman Forever), but a thoroughly menacing, wacky, and unpredictable psychopath. And Colin Farrell’s penguin has little in common with Danny DeVito’s interpretation of the role in “Batman Returns”. And then there’s the action: although it’s used in moderation, it’s all the more violent, atmospheric and impressive (keyword: Batmobile). But it never pushes itself into the center or is even used for its own sake, with which “The Batman“ in the end stands out from the majority of modern comic adaptations.
In the official DashFUN review, in which the author Julius gives a whopping 4.5 out of 5 possible stars, it also says: Media criticism and Batman deconstruction instead of blockbuster fun and serial killer crime instead of saving the world: “The BatmanIt’s not your typical superhero movie, but it’s an excellent one.
The fact that this concept was accepted is shown not only by the success at the box office but also by the reviews of the film, which are practically universally outstanding. And so it is not surprising that Warner already announced during the CinemaCon last April that “The Batman 2” is being worked on.
In addition to leading actor Robert Pattinson, author and director Matt Reeves will also return. Details of the content of the sequel have not yet been revealed, but in the following video we have already given some thought to how the Dark Knight could continue…
