


Yes, that can also be comic cinema: While Marvel relies on entertaining popcorn entertainment, in which hordes of superheroes rush through various dimensions in order not just to save the world, but several worlds at once, DC and Matt Reeves bake with “The Batman“ much smaller rolls – one might think so, at least at first glance. But this impression is deceptive.
Because even if the latest screen adventure of Gotham’s Dark Knight is basically nothing more than a serial killer hunt à la “Seven” or “Zodiac”, packs “Planet of the Apes” and “Cloverfield” makers Reeves into his investigator Thriller loads of show value – and takes its audience for three full hours (!) into a breathtakingly gloomy, fascinating world. “The Batman’ isn’t a typical origin story, where we first get to know Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) before accompanying him on his becoming Batman. And Colin Farrell’s penguin has little in common with Danny DeVito’s interpretation of the role in “Batman Returns”. And then there’s the action: although it’s used in moderation, it’s all the more violent, atmospheric and impressive (keyword: Batmobile). But it never pushes itself into the center or is even used for its own sake, with which “The Batman“ in the end stands out from the majority of modern comic adaptations.

The fact that this concept was accepted is shown not only by the success at the box office but also by the reviews of the film, which are practically universally outstanding.
