A man, his living, talking and constantly smoking teddy bear, and a cult film celebrated by them: The comedies Ted and Ted 2, starring Mark Wahlberg, are unexpected blockbusters that have propelled Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane into the live-action world. And they brought new, increased attention to a sci-fi fun: the shrill 80s curiosity “Flash Gordon”.
Both “Ted” parts received in addition to the theatrical version additionally Extended Editions, which have so far been withheld from fans in this country. A few years after their home cinema debuts abroad, the longer versions are now finding their way to Germany: A new, exclusive “Ted” collection contains parts one and two in both cut versions as well as “Flash Gordon” on Blu-ray.

The set is officially titled “Donnerbuddies Edition” and is available now and sold exclusively through Amazon. What fans of the synchro should be happy about: For the Extended Editions, all extended scenes were specially re-dubbed. As far as possible, the well-known voices were always used.
Mark Wahlberg as shy Loser John and his naughty yet surprisingly friendly teddy bear: The buddies, who are afraid of thunder, sold 3.3 and 1.2 million tickets in Germany with their two films. Thus, the scattered slackers should have enlightened a whole generation of moviegoers about the 80s cult film “Flash Gordon”:
Although it sold 1.6 million tickets in Germany in 1981 and built up a cult following with its brightly colored appearance, it was still more of a generational phenomenon. At least, until Ted and John celebrated it repeatedly and “Flash Gordon” lead actor Sam J Jones made a cameo in both “Ted” parts. “Ted,” in turn, started his own generational phenomenon: The Donnerbuddies and their hate song to thunderstorm noise could be found on countless slogan shirts for years – and even made it into the German charts as a dance remix!

No less strange: The first “Ted” part received two German alternative synchros: one in Bavarian and one in Berlin – both variants can also be found as an optional soundtrack in the Donnerbuddies Edition. And there’s more to come from John and Ted soon: MacFarlane is currently working on a prequel series that explores the unlikely friends’ teenage years. A German release date for the series developed for the US streaming service Peacock is still in the stars, where only Flash Gordon could currently be spotted.
